HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Iowa's Tony Cassioppi continued his strong redshirt freshman season by coming out on top at the two-day Midlands Championships, held over the weekend at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.
The Hononegah grad, who was the top seed entering the event, pinned Niko Camcho of American University to start the proceedings Sunday. In the round of 16, he pinned fellow Big 10 heavyweight Thomas Penola of Purdue, then dispatched Missouri's Zach Elam with a 6-0 decision.
In the semifinals Monday, Cassioppi defeated 15th-ranked Carter Isley of Northern Iowa 11-5. Monday night, Cassioppi took care of eighth-ranked Matt Stencel 5-1 to take the title.
Cassioppi, who finished seventh in the Midlands last year, is currently ranked fourth in the country.
