VALPARAISO, Ind.—Kelsie Packard is off to a strong start for the Valparaiso softball team, winning three of her first four decisions in the pitcher’s circle.
The right-handed red-shirt junior from Beloit has posted a 2.00 earned run average, completing all four of her starts. She has allowed 25 hits and eight earned runs in 28 innings, walking 17 and striking out 39.
Packard was named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 following two wins the previous weekend. Against Gardner-Webb, which had been averaging eight runs per game, she allowed just two earned runs and struck out 11 in a victory. She then one-hit Colgate, allowing just an unearned run while again fanning 11.
Finally seeing some action in the batter’s box, the former Turner standout has two hits in four trips to the plate.
Valparaiso (5-5) is off until Saturday when it faces Colgate again in the Stetson Invitational.
Looking ahead, the Crusaders will play a double-header in Madison against the Wisconsin Badgers on April 1 (3 and 5 p.m.).
• HOCKEY NEWS: Riley Jensen, a freshman from Beloit Memorial, saw action in 17 games for UW-Stout. He had four assists.
Stout had its season end when it lost a series to UW-River Falls in the WIAC Championship tournament. Stout won the first game of the series, 5-2, then lost 4-1. The Falcons (16-8-3) won a 20-minute mini-game, 3-0, to advance in the tourney.
The Blue Devils finished 8-18-1.
Former BMHS defenseman Brady Wright earned All-Northern Collegiate Hockey League Honorable Mention for the UW-Oshkosh club team.
