MADISON, Wis.—After a scoreless first period, the Middleton Cardinals scored three times in the second on their way to a 4-1 Big Eight Conference victory over Beloit Memorial Tuesday night at the Capitol Ice Arena.

“It was a great effort from everyone, but we just couldn’t find the net enough times,” Beloit head coach Kurt Buchs said.

Beloit goalie Aidan Wright, who finished with 38 saves, had 13 in the first half to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard.

Brooks Kalscheur put Middleton on the scoreboard just 1:27 into the second period on an assist by Jake Jordan.

It stayed 1-0 until the Cardinals’ Noah Erhardt scored a power-play goal at the 10:56 mark.

The Purple Knights cut the deficit to 2-1 on a goal at 15:36 by Connor Evans off an assist by Tyler Katalin. The Cardinals answered at 16:58 with a shorthanded goal scored by Jordan.

Middleton had the only goal of the third period at the 3:36 mark as Erhardt added his second goal of the game.

Winning goalie Connor Faucher had 17 saves.

Middleton was whistled for five penalties while Beloit had just one.

The Knights are back in action Thursday night when they host Waukesha at 7 p.m. at Edwards Ice Arena. Beloit will also host Oshkosh at 5 p.m. on Saturday for another non-conference game.

The 12th-seeded Knights then play No. 5 Homestead in WIAA regional play Feb. 18 at Ozaukee Ice Arena.
