Newspapers In Education

"How can American education become more relevant? How can we avoid producing passive, indifferent students? How can we turn out better informed young people with genuine curiosity about and involvement in our world? We could start by using the daily newspapers in our public schools."

- Walter Cronkite, CBS news anchorman

Every day throughout the school year, students across the Stateline Area receive a "textbook" hot off the presses that brings the world to their classroom -- allowing them to make connections between the classroom learning and their own life. This is made possible by the Beloit Daily News and the Newspapers in Education program. Research has shown that students who use newspapers in their classroom score at least 10% higher on standardized reading tests.

The Beloit Daily News has made a rock solid commitment to provide free newspapers to as many schools and facilities as money will provide. In keeping with that commitment the Beloit Daily News currently underwrites over 75% of the total cost for newspapers to over 60 area educational and service facilities. The rest of the funds come in through various fund raising efforts and the generous gifts from businesses and individuals like you.

You too can become an integral part of providing free papers to area schools by designating an additional $1 to go towards Newspapers In Education (NIE) on your Beloit Daily News billing. If you are one of our many internet readers, you already realize the importance of staying in touch with the news both here and abroad, and you can help by sending a monetary gift of any size to the Beloit Daily News, 149 State Street, Beloit, WI 53511. Be sure to designate your gift for the NIE program.

Thanking you in advance for participating with us in our effort to stand with Stateline students and teachers in the advance of literacy and a broader knowledge of local and world events.
