SOUTH BELOIT - The South Beloit girls basketball team kicked off the local preps hoop season with a 56-35 defeat to visiting Polo.
The Marcos got off to an outstanding start, grabbing a 16-5 lead after one quarter of play.
Polo extended the advantage to 27-14 at halftime and led 46-24 after three quarters.
Leading the way for the Marcos was Marah Blake, who scored eight of her game-best 22 points in the third quarter.
Mallory Patterson and Nicole Boelens each had 10 points for the Marcos.
The SoBos are once again struggling for numbers. South Beloit had just eight players in the program ready to suit up for the first game, meaning the SoBos have already announced they won't field a JV squad this season.
Junior Kaya Lervik led the SoBos with eight points, with six of those coming in the second half. Abby Castor added seven points for South Beloit.
The SoBos will be back in action when they face Earlville Wednesday night.
