Buccaneers win finales in Iowa

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Beloit College Buccaneers offset the absence of leading scorer Tristan Shoup in the season finale with Dan Babb and Darin Empereur primarily making up the difference.

Babb scored 23 points and Empereur added 22 to lead Beloit to a 76-66 road victory over Cornell College. The Bucs wrapped up the season with an 8-17 overall record and a 6-12 mark in Midwest Conference play.

The Beloit women also won their 2018-19 finale, getting typically strong efforts from seniors Shelby Kline and Candace Cunningham.

• MEN'S RECAP: Empereur dropped five 3-pointers in the first half and scored 17 points as Beloit led 39-32 at the break.

Empereur also hit a triple to open scoring in the second half. A 10-0 run pushed Beloit's lead to 52-34. The

Rams had a 6-0 run, but Beloit pushed the lead back to double digits and it stayed near that mark the rest of the way.

The Bucs outrebounded the Rams 43-35 and outscored them in second-chance points 19-4.

Babb was 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Empereur had six treys and a team-high four assists. Mason Jones and Matthew Miller each reached double-digit scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Andrew Walters pulled down a team-high 17 rebounds.

• WOMEN'S RECAP: A fast start helped the Buccaneers win their fourth straight game, 65-56, at Cornell. Beloit finished the season 8-17 overall and 7-11 in the MWC.

The Bucs shot over 57 percent (8-14) from the floor and 4-of-4 free throws as they took a 26-15 lead after the first quarter.

Kline hit 5-of-6 shots in the quarter, including 4-of-5 triples, and went on to score 18 points.

The Rams outscored the Bucs 15-15 and 14-10 in the middle quarters, but the Bucs outscored Cornell in the fourth.

Kline posted her 10th straight game in double figures and 23 in 25 chances. The Hononegah grad finished her career with 1,197 career points to rank seventh on the program's all-time scoring list.

Cunningham tallied her 15th double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The MWC's leading rebounder had 271 boards this season.

Sophomore Kelly Loudon enjoyed her fifth straight game in double figures with 13 points. She averaged 17 over the past five games. She also had nine rebounds. Junior Kelly McLean had eight assists.

• MWC TOURNEY: The men's MWC Tournament field has been set. St. Norbert goes into the tournament weekend Friday and Satureday as the top seed followed by Grinnell, Lake Forest and Monmouth.

The women's MWC Tournament field has Ripon as the top seed followed by Monmouth, Lake Forest and St. Norbert. The tournament will play out Friday and Saturday.
