LOVES PARK, Ill. - 2017 Roadrunner champion Josh Thiering of South Beloit made his jump to the Sportsman Division at the Rockford Speedway a little late this spring, but the late start sure hasn't hampered his progress.
Thiering led all 25 laps of Saturday night's feature race, posting his first Sportsman win.
The champ jumped from his outside front row starting position to take the lead and held off a close field. Point-leader Howie Ware ended up second while Richie Schinderling used the only restart of the night with six laps to go to move from seventh place to third. Adam Cartwright was fourth and Chad Smith, the evening's quick qualifier, took fifth.
• BANDITS: The finish of the 20-lap Bandit feature was terrific, with four drivers battling for the lead over the course of the final five laps.
Ben Rucker made the right moves for his first Bandit feature win. Kelsey Dobbs, the reigning Bandit champion and current point leader, settled for second place while early-race leader Mark Bielefeldt finished third. Bart Brockman, the fast qualifier, was fourth and Steve Putman Jr., was fifth.
In the Bandit Figure 8, Charlie Schork claimed his first ever Rockford Speedway win. "Chargin Charlie" Frisch was second and Rucker third.
• AMERICAN SUPER CUP SERIES: Payton Glodowski, 11, passed Mick Ellis for the lead near the midwaypoint of the 20-lap feature and coasted to his first-ever Super Cup Series victory. The Oostburg, Wis., driver took the checkered flag by nearly a straightaway ahead of Ellis, while Cayden Fretwell held off David Cerer for third position. Greg Davis rounded out the top five.
• NORTHERN OUTLAW VINTAGE SERIES: Pat Heaney led the 15-lap race flag to flag and held off the advances of Franc Beldowski over the final two laps. Gene Pennington finished third, Joe Darnell fourth and Steve Rubeck fifth.
