STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Beloit College freshman Eva Laun-Smith hoped to put up a few personal bests in Saturday's Pointer Finale Qualifier at UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon, looking toward qualifying for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships.
She was able to post two top four finishes as well as a top 10, but her best efforts came in previous meets.
Laun-Smith posted a time of 9.07 seconds to finish third in the 60-meter hurdles. Her season-best and school-record time of 8.95 was set in a preliminary heat of the event at the Midwest Conference Championships.
• The Beloit Memorial graduate is currently ranked 23rd in the nation, but it tied for the fastest time recorded by a freshman this season.
Laun-Smith had a leap of 5.38 meters (17-feet, 8 inches) to place fourth in the long jump. Her best jump of 18-3.25 came in the league championships which has her tied for 22nd in D-III. Teammate Aleeshah Heinzen also competed at Stevens Point and finished eighth with a leap of 5.31 meters (17-5.25).
• Laun-Smith and Heinzen wre eighth and 10th with jumps of 11.22 meters (36-9.75) and 10.62 meters (34-10.25), respectively.
Sophomore Frances Knaggs crossed the line in the mile in 5:54,55, her best time this season, to finish 16th.
First-year Fernando Castillo posted his best performance in the 200 this season (22.82) to finish ninth.
Additional BC marks from Saturday's last chance qualifier include: Heinzen's 8.22 in the 60-meter dash; Castillo;s 7.29 in the 60 dash, Jason Dorman's 24.28 in the 200 and 56.23 in the 400 and Dan Arkes; time of 4:30.39 in the mile.
