MADISON - The Rock County Fury's outstanding season came to an abrupt halt Saturday night at the Madison Ice Arena and at the hands of a familiar culprit.
A year ago, the Cap-City Cougars pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Fury in overtime in a WIAA secional final.
The two teams found themselves squaring off again in the finals. This time it didn't take overtime as the Sun Prairie co-op team took a 3-0 lead and then hung on for a 3-2 victory.
The Fury didn't go down without a fight. After Olivia Thompson put the Cougars ahead 3-0 just over two minutes into the third period, the Fury started battling back. Cap-City did its part, taking three of its five penalties in the period.
Maggy Henschler made it 3-1 on a power-play goal with assists from Dani Heitsman and Ally Burke. Heitsman scored a second power-play goal at the 15:35 mark on an assist by Henschler.
The Fury could get no closer, however. The Badger Conference champions finished the season with a 21-4-2 mark.
The game was scoreless after one period. Amanda Bauer and Colleen Milligan both scored for Sun Prairie in the second period. Milligan's was short-handed goal.
Winning goalie Taylor Thornton had 33 saves for the Cougars. McKaylie Buescher had 26 for the Fury.
