MILWAUKEE - Beloit Memorial's boys hockey team pulled out an overtime victory on Saturday and then found out Sunday they had earned a No. 5 seed in WIAA sectional play.
The Purple Knights improved to 8-14-0 with Saturday's 4-3 victory over Greendale at Wilson Park.
Head coach Kurt Buchs went into Sunday expecting his team to claim somewhere between a 4-6 seed.
"Janesville beat us head-to-head so they ended up four and we got five," Buchs said. "We're still seeded a spot higher than last year. Give our guys credit for finishing strong. With a full squad all season we would have finished a couple games over .500."
The Knights fell to Sun Prairie on Thursday and were down 2-0 Saturday night in the second period. Casper Clark got the Knights on the board in the second period with Hunter Harrington and Taven Santucci picking up assists. Hunter Hirst tied the score at the 16:15 mark with Tyler Harrington and Cade Whalen collecting assists.
Greendale (6-16-0) took the lead back a minute into the third overtime on a goal by Steven Delkat, but the Knights re-tied it at 12:16 as Clark again found the mark. Brayden Cooper had an assist.
Neither team could break the tie in regulation, sending it to overtime. Kyle Hanaman scored the game-winner on an assist by Dakota Lynn.
Beloit goalie Taven Santucci had 21 saves. Greendale's Jason Cooke had 50,
