Joe Thomas Smith, of Beloit, WI, died Monday, September 9, at The Suites Hospice facility in Beloit. Joe was born in Canton, MO to Frank William and Emma A. Smith on June 23, 1929. He was raised by his father and step-mother, Leta Smith, following his mother's early death.
Joe graduated from Culver-Stockton College in Canton with a BA in Physics in 1951. He entered the US Marine Corps in 1951, and served in Korea during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 stars, and the United Nations Service Medal.
He was employed by Fairbanks-Morse in Beloit for 37 years, retiring in 1991.
He married Catherine E. (Betty) Smith on September 3, 1961 in Keokuk, Iowa.
Joe lived in Beloit since 1953, and became lifelong friends with George Porter and his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his wife, who died in 2008.
He is survived by his sister, Emma Ruth, of Painted Post, NY, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at the Vigen Memorial of Keokuk from 10-10:30, with burial to follow at the Keokuk National Cemetery at 11:00 AM.
