Mildred (Gibbs) Smith, 96, of Beloit, WI, died Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Riverside Terrace.

Mildred was the youngest child of Ross and Augusta (Winchester) Gibbs, born on May 3, 1921 in Beloit, WI. After graduation from Beloit High School, she followed her brothers, Arthur and Ross, into the Army when women were first allowed to join the military. Basic training was in Iowa, and then she was sent to Camp Plauche in New Orleans, LA. There she met Harvey C. Smith from Brooklyn, NY. They were married May 27, 1944. The whole camp turned out for the first all military wedding on the post.

Two children were born on army bases, and later two more were born in Beloit after they had left the army.

Mildred had many careers over the years. In 1968 she and Harvey moved to Orange, CA and started their own business. When the business was sold, she earned a license to become a realtor. She kept busy even after retirement, meeting new people in local stores where she demonstrated products.

Not one to sit still, she was a life long learner, taking college courses, classes and traveling. Mildred and Harvey had many adventures in their motor home. Some trips were shared with travel buddies, going to New York for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty and to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. She wrote the group's newsletter and poems about the trips. Her greatest joy was the trips they took to discover her family's genealogy, meeting family she had never known, and leaving the stories of the ancestors for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and those yet to come. Thank you Mom.

Survivors include her children, Gloria (Roger) Christiansen of Beloit, WI, Harvey (Janet) Smith II of Milton, WI, Scott (Cindy) Smith of Pollack, ID and Debra Smith of Beloit, WI; grandchildren, Nicole (Riad) Amro of Madison, WI, Jessica Lynes of Janesville, WI, Nathanial Smith of Madison, WI, Rebecca (Bruce Titus) Smith of Janesville, WI and Christopher Smith of Milton, WI; great grandchildren, Zak Amro, Noah Amro, Jenna Amro, Sumer Amro, Abby Lynes, Julie Lynes, Brianna Lynes and Madison Titus.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband Harvey in 2013, sister Dorothy Gibbs, brothers Arthur Gibbs and Ross Gibbs Jr.

Funeral service for Mildred will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2018 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with Pastor Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Military Rites will be accorded by the V.F.W. Post #2306.
