BELOIT - The School District of Beloit Board of Education is seeking candidates for former Vice President David Wilson's recently-vacated board position. The new board member would serve out Wilson's term which expires April 2020.
In an interview Monday, Board of Education President Pam Charles said the board will be collecting applications. The board will interview those who meet the necessary qualifications on Sept. 5, before voting and selecting a candidate that same evening.
Charles noted there is a board retreat set for Sept. 6.
"We wanted to get the position posted right away so the new board member could be part of it," Charles added.
When asked about the characteristics of a good board member, Charles said: "The board will be looking for a person who understands the role, someone who will support the superintendent in his decisions, and has the time and commitment to serve. The belief that we can be a district where each child is able to succeed, and an attitude that we can accomplish our district's goals is critical. We don't always agree on every issue. Being respectful and open-minded are important board member qualities that help us to communicate well, accept board decisions, and lead as a team with one primary focus - kids."
Candidates who have questions may contact board secretary Michelle Shope at 608-361-4160 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Forms are available on the district website at www.sdb.k12.wi.us under the Board of Education portion of the website or may be picked up at the Kolak Education Center, 1500 Fourth St.
To be eligible, a candidate must be 18 years or older, a resident of the district for at least 28 consecutive days prior to applying and be a citizen of the United States.
All application materials must be returned to the Shope by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Candidates must complete and return a declaration of candidacy by an elector.
Candidates will be contacted with the date, time and location of the vacancy interviews to be held by the board. The interviews will be conducted at a posted special board meeting.
Candidate forms should be sent to School District of Beloit Kolak Education Center Attn: Board Secretary 1500 Keeler Avenue Beloit, WI 53511 or emailed to Shope.
Wilson resigned via a Facebook post on Friday after voicing concerns about what he considered a disproportionate amount of black staff leaving the district at last Tuesday's board meeting. At the meeting the board also voted to accept his wife's resignation as Beloit Memorial High School Assistant Principal. Wilson said his family was moving out of the district.
According to meeting minutes from the Green Bay School District, Banks-Wilson has been hired as an elementary school principal.
