JANESVILLE - An unexploded artillery shell was found by a Janesville resident while he was cleaning out his mother's attic Friday and he drove the explosive ordinance device to the Rock County Sheriff's Office.
The resident loaded the device into his vehicle and drove to the front parking lot of the sheriff's office because he was not sure what to do with it.
The parking lot was blocked off and people in the immediate area were evacuated as a safety precaution. The Rockford Police Department Bomb Squad was called to the parking lot and squad members properly took the device, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. The shell will be disposed of at a later time, the news release stated.
The Rock County Sheriff's Office would like to caution citizens about handling these types of devices or any other artillery. The best and safest practice is to quarantine the area, safely evacuate and call 911 as soon as possible.
