BELOIT - To help celebrate special people who make Greater Beloit a better place, save this date: Monday, April 15.
The 39th Annual Beloit Daily News Volunteer of the Month (VOM) banquet will take place at Merrill & Houston's Steak Joint, 500 Pleasant St.
Planning for the spring banquet is under way, and more details on prices and the process for placing reservations will be announced soon in the newspaper.
The Beloit Daily News and its community-minded sponsors will be hosting this enjoyable evening. The growing list of sponsors will be announced soon.
"Please plan to join us at this heartwarming event to honor the many silent heroes working behind the scenes to make the community a better place. A big turnout is a way to send a powerful 'thank you' message to those who serve out of a deep commitment to their fellow citizens of the Stateline Area," said Senior Writer Hillary Gavan, who coordinates the program for the newspaper.
For decades, the volunteer recognition program has existed to honor people who enthusiastically give countless hours of unpaid time to make life better for those around them. Recognizing volunteers is a way to showcase characteristics of good role models and help identify and strengthen the community's values. This year's selection of volunteers being recognized includes individuals who guide and support youth, translate Spanish to English and support literacy, help feed the hungry, fundraise for local agencies, support the arts and help animate their downtowns through festival volunteerism, beautification and planning efforts.
"Although those who give bountifully reap the rich personal rewards that come from helping others, we have long believed they also deserve the community's gratitude," Gavan said. "The volunteers' good works create ripple effects which spread to friends and family members and contribute to a community's overall progress for generations to come."
The newspaper's community VOM committee members scout out the region's more dedicated servants. Committee members select nominees and vote on those to be featured in a monthly article, generally published the second Monday of the month. At the end of the year all recipients are presented with a plaque, recognition and a complimentary meal at the Beloit Daily News Volunteer Recognition Banquet.
Winners also will be featured in a special commemorative edition, to be published in the April 15 newspaper.
