BELOIT - A teacher at Beloit Memorial High School was arrested Tuesday as the Beloit Police Department investigates a report of sexual assault involving inappropriate touching.

Scott Abbott, 53, of Rockford, was arrested for sexual assault of a child by a school staff person. The Rock County District Attorney's Office will be reviewing this arrest.

The School District of Beloit and Beloit Memorial High School is fully cooperating with the investigation.

A news release from the School District of Beloit confirmed a Beloit Memorial High School staff member was arrested, but the release offered no further details.

Public Information Officer Brian Vissers said on Wednesday that Abbott had been placed on administrative leave.

The release did say the school district wants to "assure parents and the community that all students and other staff are safe."

Abbott was the House Build instructor at BMHS, teaching students who were receiving home construction experience through the program.

According to Beloit Strategic Communications Director Sarah Millard the alleged assault occurred on school grounds, but she did not specify when the alleged incident happened.

In 2016-2017, there was no student house build project due to changing staff. Abbott told the Beloit Daily News in a November interview he and other staff had been working to resurrect the program and get it back on track in 2018-2019. In November, Abbott announced a three-bedroom and two-bathroom home at 2261 Trevino Court was listed for sale.

The newspaper attempted to reach Abbott for a response, but had not heard back from him by press time.

According to Rock County Jail command staff, Abbott was booked and released Tuesday, and given a Rock County Circuit Court date of March 26.

The school district has had to deal with other sexual misconduct allegations in the past year.

In February of 2018, Tyler Edge, 25, a former BMHS substitute teacher, was charged with second-degree sexual assault of a child and repeated sexual assault of a child after more than 20 allegations surfaced stemming from alleged contact with a 15-year-old boy.

Former Aldrich Intermediate School Security Guard Larry Woods, 63, was arrested and charged with repeated sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in June of 2018 for alleged repeated sexual contact with the child since the fall of 2017 and his arrest.

Both cases remain open and ongoing in Rock County Circuit Court.
