TOWN OF BELOIT - A new Casey's General Store is set to be operational in the Town of Beloit in early November, the first development project in the township's potential uptown district.

Tim Kienbaum, community development director, said crews broke ground at the facility in late June. Construction crews are working on setting the footings at the northwest corner of Inman Parkway and Prairie Avenue.

The new store is part of an effort to build more Casey's stores in Wisconsin, officials previously said.

There are approximately 500 general stores in Iowa and about 400 in Illinois, while there were less than 20 stores in Wisconsin just one year ago.

Town officials hope this new business will be the first of many, as they are interested in creating an entire uptown district in the area surrounding Inman Parkway.

Since more than 90 percent of the town's population lives within 1.5 to 2 miles of the corridor, the town is interested in further developing the area. The primary area of focus is from Park Avenue to Prairie Avenue. The town also would like to take a look at developing streets that connect to Inman Parkway. To detail the proposed improvements, the town recently developed a Marketing and Economic Development Plan, which was adopted by the town board after the town held two community meetings on the uptown district project.

Some community recommendations included: An additional restaurant space, a coffee shop, a two or three-story multi-use building on Inman Parkway next to the police department to house commercial businesses, multi-unit residential apartments, larger industrial facilities; on-street parking and a hotel and conference center.

Town administrator Ian Haas said he's received some interest from parties, but there's no concrete development updates for the Uptown Districts at this time.

Casey's General Store has more than 2,000 locations, including locations in Roscoe, Rockton, Beloit, Machesney Park and Janesville. Depending on the location, Casey's General Stores offer patrons gas as well as food such as donuts, subs, pizza and an option for delivery.
