BELOIT - Beloit residents and visitors will soon have a new way to get around downtown, with a Beloit resident planning to open a pedicab business this summer.
Chariot Cabs Adventure Rides owner Ken McPheron has spent the last few months preparing just how he'll cater to downtown pedestrians. Pedicabs, also known as rickshaws, are tricycles with a carriage in the back that's pedaled by cab "driver."
McPheron said he got the idea after thinking of a unique way to help his mom get around and enjoy Beloit.
"I was trying to figure out how to get her around, but then I wanted to give everyone a ride," McPheron said.
McPheron and his fleet of six pedicabs will roam around downtown along the Grand Avenue corridor and be available for special events. On Fridays and Saturdays, McPheron plans to run the "Bicycle Bar Bounce" in downtown Beloit offering unlimited rides for $15 from 6 p.m. to midnight.
The pedicabs will also be around for events like the Beloit Farmers Market, he added.
"I want people to catch onto it," McPheron said. "It's a unique way to see the city. We love Beloit and I don't think I will ever leave. We want to be a part of what's going on here."
McPheron said he's currently looking for drivers, and those interested in applying can call 224-622-9710.
