Whittington ends career with honors

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Clarke College senior Kea Whittington, from Beloit, finished off her season in style, posting a rare triple-double in her team's conference tournament and then earning post-season accolades.

Whittington had 15 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists in Clarke's 70-66 Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament first-round home win over Missouri Valley College.

The Clarke Pride ended up 20-11 for the season as they fell to second-seeded William Penn, 82-64, in the tournament quarterfinals on March 1. Whittington, a Beloit Memorial graduate, had 13 points in that contest.

The 5-foot-6 guard earned First Team honors on the All-Heart of America Athletic Conference squad. She also nailed down Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight season.

Whittington ranks first in the nation in NAIA Division 1 in assists with 182. She ranks second in assists per game at 6.07. She ranks ninth in steals with 78 and 15th in steals per game (2.60).

She was the team leader in both assists and steals and ranked third in scoring (14.2).

Whittington's scoring average of 14.2 was exactly the same as last season when she was named Second Team all-conference. Last year she led the nation in steals per game (4.03) and was second in total steals (125). she ranked 13th nationally in assists (137).

• FERGER EARNS ALL-WIAC: Beloit Turner graduate Dylan Ferger, a UW-Whitewater junior, earned All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors by virtue of placing in the top three in the high jump at the WIAC Indoor Championships recently.

Ferger posted a jump of 6-foot, 8.75 inches (2.05 meters), good for third place in the meet. He narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA D-III nationals. The final qualifier was at 2.07 meters.
