SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. - Beloit Memorial's boys hockey team came out flat and fell behind Sun Prairie 5-0 in the first period Tuesday night.
The Purple Knights trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the second period before the Cardinals went on to post a 7-2 Big Eight Conference victory.
Sun Prairie outshot Beloit 17-10 in the first period, getting two goals by Benett Halbleib. Quinten Gross, C.J. Harkins and Kaden Brunson also scored.
"Unfortunately we played just like we practiced this week," Beloit head coach Kurt Buchs said. "We had no jam early. Sun Prairie came right after us. After that, we played much better."
Beloit answered with a pair of power-play goals in the second period. Cade Whalen scored on an assist by Sean McMillan and Hunter Harrington added a second goal on an assist by Casper Clark to cut it to 5-2.
Sun Prairie got the two goals back before the end of the period. Tyler Chitwood and Harkins both scored.
The Knights had switched goaltenders by then. Taven Santucci went the first 17 minutes, posting 12 saves. Freshman Aiden Wright came on to play the final 34 minutes. He posted 34 saves.
"Aiden did exactly what you hope to get from your backup goalie," Buchs said. "He's a big kid and he played well."
