BELOIT - Down by 15 at the half, Beloit College's men's basketball team cut the deficit to eight before the visiting Monmouth Fighting Scots pulled away for a 78-56 victory Saturday afternoon.
The Buccaneers also fell in Flood Arena on Friday night to Grinnell College, 102-84.
Tristan Shoup got Beloit off to a 6-0 start before Monmouth roared to a 15-point lead, 38-23, at halftime. Beloit got within 40-32 on a jumper by Carlton Jenning, but no closer.
Shoup finished with 15 points and Cody Risseeuw added 11.
Beloit (1-5, 0-3) will play Ripon (2-3, 0-2) at Weiske Gymnasium at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The Bucs and Pioneers had five ties and nine lead changes in the first half on Friday before the visitors took a 51-43 halftime lead. They outscored Beloit 51-41 in the second half.
Grinnell converted 15 three-pointers and was 19-of-24 at the free-throw line. Beloit had four three-pointers and just 8-of-15 at the line.
The Bucs committed 32 turnovers in the loss.
Shoup led Beloit with 32 points and 18 rebounds. He converted 73 percent from the field (16-of-22). Risseeuw and Mason Jones each had 13 points for Beloit.
Grinnell was led by Vinny Curta (27 points) and Hannes Kogelnik (21).
