MADISON, Wis. - In the preseason, Beloit Memorial head coach Tim Richert referred to John Rodriguez as one of "his football guys."

Seems Rodriguez is pretty fair at basketball, too.

The senior dropped in a career-high 23 points to spark the Purple Knights to a 73-62 victory over host Madison West in their Big Eight Conference opener.

Trayvon "Bonzy" Fair also had 14 points, including 8-of-10 free throws. The teams were tied at halftime before the Purple Knights outscored the Regents 37-26 in a standout second half performance.

Reece Collins added 10 points, while Ezra Thompson led the Regents with 15 points. The Knights (1-2) will host Verona at Barkin Arena Saturday.
