Three Rockford men face charges following a shooting in the parking lot of a Town of Beloit business that left three men wounded.
Town of Beloit police were notified at 1:58 a.m. Sunday of a shooting at the Silver Slipper Saloon, 1901 S. Wisconsin Ave., formerly the Bear Chest, an adult exotic dance club. When police arrived they saw 20 to 30 individuals fleeing on foot and in vehicles.
Antwann Griffin, 25, of Rockford was identified as one of the shooters, according to a Town of Beloit Police news release. He was charged with recklessly endangering safety, intoxicated use of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. John Griffin, 22, and Leanthony Lilly, 26, both of Rockford, also have been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct respectively. Antwann Griffin is being held at the Winnebago County Jail awaiting extradition to Wisconsin while John Griffin and Leanthony Lilly were charged and released with court dates.
Antwann Griffin is expected to appear in court later today, said Town of Beloit Police Chief Steven Kopp.
Police are looking over surveillance footage from the night of the shooting, Kopp said. At least one other subject was seen shooting on camera, and police have yet to identify the suspect.
South Beloit police pulled over the car containing Antwann Griffin, John Griffin and Leathony Lilly shortly after the shooting.
Two men with gun shot wounds to their legs, arrived at Beloit Memorial Hospital shortly after the shooting was reported.
One of the victims was treated and released, the other had to have surgery and is still being cared for at Beloit Memorial Hospital, Kopp said.
John Griffin was treated by paramedics for a bullet graze to the head. Kopp said the victims have told police the accounts of the night.
It is believed other men fired guns during the incident.
Kopp said the fight may have been between Rockford and Beloit residents.
Police believe the confrontation between the individuals involved started at Viking Lanes, 210 Oak Grove Ave., South Beloit, then moved to the Silver Slipper later.
As the bar was closing, the subjects exited the bar and a fist fight broke out. Shortly afterward the suspects took out their guns and began firing, Kopp said. There aren’t any known gang affiliations yet, but witnesses told police those involved were seen flashing gang signs inside the club.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call the Town of Beloit Police at 608-757-2244.
