Beloit police arrested a suspect in the recent armed robberies at the Turtle Tap and the CITGO gas station, according to police.

Ernest Sanwick, 46, of the 100 block of Dearborn Street, was taken into custody Monday after the Beloit SWAT team was called to the Del-Mae Motel on Madison Road in Beloit where Sanwick was staying.

Just before 9 a.m. Monday, a police officer spotted Sanwick’s vehicle in the parking lot of the hotel at 1850 Madison Road.

As a precautionary measure, the area was secured by officers, traffic was diverted off of Madison Road, and motel residents were evacuated.

Sanwick was taken into custody at about 11:30 p.m. after Sanwick attempted to flee the area by climbing out of the bathroom window of his motel room. He was immediately taken into custody without incident.

Sanwick was arrested on two counts of armed robbery.

The first occurred Friday just after midnight at the CITGO gas station, 1888 Shopiere Road. The second was reported on Sunday at about 8:25 a.m. at the Turtle Tap, 1344 E. Grand Ave.

Sanwick is being held at the Rock County Jail pending his initial court appearance.
