Shot on city’s East Side
A Beloit man was killed in an early-morning shooting today in the 1500 block of Porter Avenue.
Shawn D. Bell, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene this morning by personnel from the Rock County Coroner’s Office.
Beloit police received several calls reporting multiple gunshots beginning around 2:18 a.m. and were also alerted by Shot Spotter technology of the incident.
Upon arrival, police found Bell lying in the street. Beloit Fire Department paramedics also responded to the scene.
The scene of the death is only a block away from Merrill Elementary School.
The number of gunshot wounds Bell suffered was not released by police investigators this morning.
An autopsy will be performed today in Madison.
Police are following up on a number of leads, but have yet to make any arrests. Deputy Chief Tom Dunkin said several people of interest had been identified, but could not be named as the investigation is still under way.
“I don’t think it was a random act of violence,” Dunkin said.
The homicide marks Beloit’s first for 2011.
Police will reveal additional details as information becomes available, Dunkin said.
Units from the Rock County Coroner’s Office, as well as police detectives and evidence technicians were all called to the scene and remained there for much of the morning.
Police said Bell had an extensive criminal background dating back to 2003, including felonies for taking and driving a vehicle without consent, jumping bail, substantial battery, battery by prisoners and a second offense of possession of THC.
