History is full of great rivalries. The Hatfields vs. The McCoys rivalry involved socio-economic differences, civil war divisions and even a shooting over who owned a pig. Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton dueled at dawn to settle their political differences. And Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci fought for artistic acclaim during the Renaissance. More recent rivalries include Coke vs. Pepsi, Leno vs. Letterman, Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West, Star Trek vs. Star Wars, and DC Comics vs. Marvel. But perhaps the greatest rivalry of all time goes back to the year 1921. It all started when Curly Lambeau and the Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Boosters by a score of 13 to 6. The Boosters went on to become the Chicago Bears and the rest, as they say, is history. The teams have met 195 times and as of the most recent Packer victory over the Bears a couple of weeks ago, the Packers lead the series with 95 wins over the Bears 94 wins (the teams have tied six times). Most importantly, the Packers have 13 NFL titles and five Super Bowl appearances to the Bears nine titles and two Super Bowl appearances.
I could probably go on and on about this great sports rivalry, but why listen to me when you can come to the library and hear all about it from an expert? Join us on Nov. 11 from noon-1:30 p.m. to hear Wisconsin author Jim Rice talk about 92 years worth of rivalry between the amazing Green Bay Packers and that other NFL team south of the Wisconsin border. Seating is limited, so register in advance by calling 608-364-2905. Refreshments will be served at this free event starting at 11:30 a.m. (did someone say brats?) and don't forget to wear your team colors!

• "Minnesota-Wisconsin College Football Rivalry" by Dave Anderson. There are many great rivalries in Division I college football, but only one can say it has been played the longest: Minnesota and Wisconsin. Since 1890, the Golden Gophers and Badgers have faced each other in the annual game known as the Border Battle. Early teams competed for the coveted "Slab of Bacon" trophy until 1948, when the winning team would take home Paul Bunyan's Axe, a tradition that continues to this day. (Book Description)
