Farmers Market! The light at the end of a dreary winter tunnel. Old friends, new friends, favorite vendors.
I love supporting the local farmers, who grow their own produce. What I don't love: vendors who purchase produce from grocers (to sell as their own). There are a couple of vendors who are upfront about "shipped" produce, but isn't the point of Farmers Market to support local farmers? It's a thumb in the eye to our local farmers, to have to compete with vendors, who sell store bought. If/when I wish to purchase out of season produce, I'll go to Woodman's.
The whole concept of Farmers Market is to support and purchase locally grown produce. I am addressing produce vendors only, not the lovely homemade items that are also sold, which is a nice addition.
Second point: Squishing all of the vendors into the road, off of State Street sidewalk, annoying! There is less space to look at, to purchase, to walk. Please put the vendors back on the sidewalk on State Street So much easier to maneuver. I've been cursed at and glared at for having the audacity to greet and chat with my fellow hibernators. Farmers Market is also about reconnecting with people after a long winter. It's Beloit's crowning jewel and community connector.
And, thank you for the "no dogs" at market. I don't hate dogs, they just don't belong in close quarters. It's too crowded; there have been aggressive dogs, scared dogs, peeing dogs, excitable dogs, yappy dogs. They are a nuisance to the crowds and vendors.
Support our farmers. It's back breaking work.
