JANESVILLE - The roar of engines will soon be heard as more than a dozen historic planes fly into the Stateline Area for a weekend of fun.

The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Warbird Weekend will be held from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. July 21-22 at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport, 1716 W. Airport Road.

Daily tickets to the event are $10 per person or $20 per family (parents and children under age 18). Credit cards are accepted online, admission is cash-only at the gate.

"We are excited to bring the AirPower History Tour to Janesville," said Tour Manager Johnathan Oliver in a press release. "The people of southern Wisconsin offered strong support for the 2013-2017 events, so we are bringing yet another unique show in 2018 for the Janesville, Beloit, Rockford and Madison communities to enjoy."

Aviation fans will be able to see a wide variety of aircrafts up-close during Warbird Weekend. The event lineup features many airplanes dating from the World War II and Vietnam War eras.

Scheduled to appear are B-25 "Miss Mitchell," a BT-13 Vultee, North American SNJ Texan, Stinson L-5 Sentinel, P-13 Stearman, T-6 Texan, P-51 Mustang, C-45 Expeditor, Ryan PT-22 Recruit, AC-47 "Spooky," Gruman C1-A Trader, Hawker 800XP, Aero L-29 Delfin Jet, KC-135, Dassault Falcon 900 and OH6A Cayuse "Loach."

Another exciting addition to the lineup is the newly restored C-47 "That's All Brother." The very special plane led the formation that dropped paratroopers into France on D-Day.

All of the Warbird Weekend planes will be on static display at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport during the event. Some planes will also be offering ground tours and even air rides for an additional fee. A variety of vendors will be on site offering snacks, food and aviation-related memorabilia for sale.

"This is a historic opportunity for the public to view, touch, photograph, climb-through and even fly in these aircraft at one location," said Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport Manager Greg Cullen. In addition to being able to see the airplanes, Warbird Weekend visitors can enjoy several additional special visitors and events.

For those who love a good run, the Runway Dash 10K will take place starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, July 21. Proceeds from the run will benefit the American Cancer Society and participants can purchase half price tickets to the Warbird show after the race. Registration for the 10K is $35 per person and includes a T-shirt.

There will also be a flyover of approximately 160 Beechcraft planes around noon on Saturday as the fleet flies to Oshkosh.

Saturday night will be the time for locals to put on their best 1940s garb and enjoy the "Swing and Wings" hangar dance. There will be food, drinks and live music by Jack Farina and his 16-member big band orchestra from 7-10 p.m. at SC Aviation, 4120 S. Discovery Drive. General admission to Swing and Wings is $25 per person. Kids under 8 are free.

Proceeds from Swing and Wings will benefit the Veteran War Memorial at Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport and help to add the names of Rock County veterans who died while serving during conflicts from the Vietnam War to present day. The Veteran War Memorial currently has the names of Rock County veterans from World War I, World War II and the Korean War. Proceeds will also be used to benefit local students participating in STEM aviation programs.

In addition, Jeff Skiles, first officer of US Airways Flight 1549, the "Miracle on the Hudson," will be at Warbird Weekend to take photographs and answer questions on Saturday and Sunday. Author Steve Snyder also will be selling autographed copies of his book "Shot Down," which tells the story of pilot Howard Snyder and crew on the B-17 "Susan Ruth."

If two days of aviation activities just isn't enough, flight buffs should note that many of the Warbird Weekend airplanes and their crew members will be heading on to EAA AirVenture.

Hosted annually, EAA AirVenture is running July 23-29 in Oshkosh. The week-long event draws more than 10,000 airplanes and is known as the "World's Largest Fly-In Gathering."
