The Boston Globe - which has served since 1872 the city that is the cradle of American liberty - initiated a "call to action," asking journalists to speak as one voice on Aug. 16 to defend fact-based reporting against the name-calling assault of "fake news" and "enemies of the people."
Here in Wisconsin, the call went out from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, the trade organization that represents daily and weekly newspapers across the state.
The Beloit Daily News stands today with its colleagues across America in defense of independent fact-finders who do their best every day to bring truth to the people, undiluted by partisan spin or self-interested politicians and their enablers. At its best, professional journalism exists to hold the powerful to account, particularly those who exercise their power through control of taxpayer dollars.
Hundreds of newspapers nationwide join today in defending that role, pushing back against the misguided few who believe American freedom somehow would be better protected by silencing the free press. We hope our readers will think deeply about the value of independent reporting, and consciously choose to support it.
