Unproductive bickering is no substitute for sensible immigration policy.
CONGRESSMAN MARK POCAN, who represents the Beloit area, is pushing a bill that would abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. He says, following a trip to the border with Mexico, that ICE has been "hunting down and tearing apart families."
More accurately, ICE has been following orders. Question the orders, not the agency.
It became clear very quickly the majority of Americans were deeply uncomfortable with what was happening at the border. Because of that, the Trump administration was forced to back down on its policy to separate children from their families.
What America needs is an immigration policy that makes sense, and both national parties have failed. Secure borders are the right and responsibility of every sovereign nation, and America does not need to apologize for working to control entry. That statement must be qualified, however, by a recognition that humane treatment of people is not optional in a decent society.
Enough political stunts. To Republicans and Democrats alike: Do your jobs.
