(Wednesday) - A Daily News contest that involved voting for feminine candidates by readers who could vote as often as they wished, has concluded; Mrs. George Bishop got almost 10 million votes and won a $1,000 Buick automobile; Mrs. Agnes Weirick won a $450 piano, Mrs. Frank Philhower won a diamond ring with three million votes and Miss Hattie Cannon won a scholarship with about 1.6 million votes. ... The Bros. Stanton have $2.50 work shoes for $1.95 and boys’ box calf shoes for $1.75. ... Men’s suits are priced from $25 to $40 and men’s overcoats are as low as $25 at the Golden Eagle Clothing Co., operated by Will Weirick.

(Tuesday) - Another early-season arctic blast has hit Beloit with the temperature sinking to 1 above zero. ... Wisconsin Knife Works President Robert H. Solem has announced plans to build a new factory at Prairie Avenue and Hart Road; Solem says the firm’s woodworking equipment is selling well and the company has made some acquisitions. ... Purple Knights players didn’t make the Big Eight conference first or second teams, but Ron Delaney and Stan Foster made the honorable mention list. ... Mrs. Myron Clark, fifth grade teacher at Cunningham School, has been named the Rotary Club’s teacher of the month.

Kelly Jr. ... Beloit Memorial’s Purple Knights opened their 1984 basketball season with a 76-59 win over Elkhorn; seniors Kenny White, Mel Zinn and Roy Ingram helped the team in their final season. ... South Beloit’s season opened against Brodhead’s Cardinals resulting in an 80-55 win for the SoBos, led by Pete Scalia, with 31 points.

Edward and Marlene Fischer and Steven J. Myers have died in a house fire; all were developmentally disabled; the blaze destroyed their residence in rural Elkhorn. ... Beloiter, Bridget Batler, 20, is the featured model for the January 2000 issue of Gallery Magazine; she’s a South Beloit High School graduate.
