Turtle plans Veterans Day
Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 236 will hold a Veterans’ Day observance at 11 a.m. at the Turtle Town Hall, 6916 S. County Road J, on Saturday.
The event will include a 21 gun salute, brief comments by State Rep. Chuck Benedict, D-Beloit, and a light lunch. Town Chair Roger Anclam said having the event on Saturday, rather than Wednesday, Nov. 11 will allow more people to attend who would otherwise be working.
Public invited to view stars
Beloit College will host an open house at the college observatory on the roof of the Center for the Sciences from 7:30 - 9 p.m. Nov. 18.
Participants can observe the night sky using binoculars and 10-inch telescopes. Weather permitting, visitors will be able to view Jupiter, Uranus and the open star cluster Pleiades.
In case of cloudy skies or inclement weather, a faculty member from the department of physics and astronomy will give a lecture in the Porter Brown Auditorium in Room 150 in the Center for the sciences.
Man arrested for vaccine theft
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee police have arrested a local man accused of stealing a truck carrying 900 doses of swine-flu vaccine.
The suspect is a 38-year-old man with a criminal record. Police are looking for two other men who were seen in the vehicle with him.
The truck was taken Thursday about 7:50 p.m. as it idled outside a swine-flu clinic.
Officers found the abandoned truck less than an hour later with the vaccine apparently intact. As they investigated, a witness pointed to the 38-year-old leaving a nearby liquor store and identified him as one of the three men in the truck.
City health official Raquel Filmanowicz says even if the vaccine hasn’t been tampered with, it’s still considered “compromised” because it was out of city possession. She says it can no longer be used.
