Superintendent Milt Thompson was asking for ideas to plan the future of the School District of Beloit during a strategic planning hearing held Thursday night at Vision Beloit.
Thompson and the school district will be holding more meetings regarding the planning of the program on Nov. 9, 17 and 19.
Thompson said strategic planning helps district officials make decisions based on priority. Several teachers attended the seminar and audience members often asked questions. Thompson has had plans for creating a strategic plan since before being chosen by the board of education to be superintendent. The Beloit district’s previous strategic plan ended in 2005.
Thompson also said the new strategic plan will cost between $35,000 and $40,000 for the first year, but in the second year the price should drop.
“I will not let this sit on the shelf,” Thompson said. “I will push it along.”
The district’s strategic plan will start with assembling a panel of about 30 people, to help determine measurable education goals and strategies for attaining them. Panel members will be key community leaders, minorities, people involved in the education field and business owners. Thompson said 14 members of the panel will not be involved with the school district. The panel will be led by facilitator Howard Feddema from the Cambridge Group to help determine clear measurable education goals. The panel will meet over three days from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thompson is nearly ready to conduct interviews for members. He hopes to have the panel assembled by Thanksgiving.
After measurable goals are determined, an action team is assembled. The action team will develop specific actions that may be performed to reach measurable education goals. The action team then meets with the panel to discuss whether the specific actions and goals agree. The district will then adhere to the plan in hopes of reaching the education goals.
“It is going to change my job, it is going to change everyone’s job.” Thompson said.
The strategic plan will last between five to seven years, and if successful could be renewed. Thompson said a strategic plan is necessary to prioritize educational goals. Strategic planning will hold education accountable by setting real goals and using many different methods to achieve them.
“We fail kids because we create systems that are set up for one possibility,” Thompson said.
Thompson’s next forum will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Beloit Memorial High School cafeteria.
