Blackhawk Tech, Beloit College and Townview Elementary to host programs
Stateline Area organizations will host observances throughout the weekend and next week in memory of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.
On Saturday from 3-5 p.m., Blackhawk Technical College, 6004 Prairie Ave., will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration titled “Keeping the Dream Alive.” This year's program will include a musical performance by the Beloit Community Choir, and a special tribute will be paid to the late Hugo Henry of Beloit. Immediately following the program, visitors are invited to partake in a multi-cultural experience of fellowship and food.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Service Award, YWCA Peace Award and the UAW Region 4 Civil Rights Education Scholarship Award will be presented at the event.
The celebration is sponsored by the Civil Rights Committee of UAW Local 95, Blackhawk Technical College and the school districts of Beloit and Janesville.
Beloit College will celebrate its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation at 4 p.m. Jan. 19 in Eaton Chapel on the Beloit College campus. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Sherrick G. Anderson of Beloit, whose speech is titled “When Dreams Come True.”
Anderson is a Beloit native and graduated from Beloit Memorial High School in 1983. The senior pastor of Higher Ground Christian Center in Beloit received his bachelor's degree from Mississippi Valley State University and did further study at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He serves on various boards and committees throughout Wisconsin and in Beloit. He resides in Beloit with his wife and two children.
The program will include presentations by the Martin Luther King Youth Choir, students from Beloit College and community representatives. This marks the fourth year of the community observance at the college and the first time a local speaker has been featured. The convocation is free and open to the public.
Townview Elementary School will celebrate the holiday on Jan. 16. Students from fourth-grade teacher Maria Ignjatovic's class will present information about King. Staff and students will also watch the movie “Our Friend, Martin.” The movie documents King's message to “turn his dream of freedom into reality.” Students will also create a Townview “Wall of Wishes” to display their dreams for the world.
This year, in order to recognize King's work, Townview students will be participating in a coin collection to aid homeless families in the Beloit area. The collected money will be donated to Hands of Faith, a local organization that assists homeless families on our community. The coin collection will be held Jan. 20-23. The school hopes the students will learn the importance of giving back to the community and encourages them to do an extra chore around the house in order to earn coins to donate to the drive.
