ORFORDVILLE - Five seats are up for re-election in the Village of Orfordville, including the offices of the village president, municipal judge and three trustee positions.
Candidates who turned in their nomination papers before the Tuesday deadline include Village President David Olsen, Municipal Judge Terry Miller, and Village Trustees Dale Peterson and Phil Zuege, said Village Clerk Sherri Waege.
Village Trustee Chad Cleasby, who has served on the board for four years, said he would not run for re-election because he wants to spend more time with his children.
Because Cleasby announced he would not run, the deadline has been extended by 72 hours for Orfordville residents wishing to run for the trustee position, Waege said. Nomination papers for the trustee position must be turned in to Orfordville Village Hall, 106 N. Center St., by 5 p.m. Friday, Waege said.
The election for the five, two-year positions will be held on April 7.
Village Trustee Phil Zuege has served Orfordville for two years, and is seeking re-election because some of the people in the village asked him to run.
One of Zuege's accomplishments is chairing the business sign committee and working with local businesses and Parkview School District to put up an electronic sign. Zuege also helped organize the spring cleanup in the village.
If re-elected, Zuege plans to work on the library board as it seeks funds for a new building, he said. Last month, property was purchased for a new library, which is across the street from Orfordville Village Hall. Village residents want to build a new library because the current library is too small for the amount of usage it gets, and the library has been gaining more patrons lately, he said.
A new library probably wouldn't be constructed for two to four years, Zuege said. Because the library would be paid for with donations only, the Friends of the Library is seeking funds and grants for the new building, Zuege said. If someone wanted to step forward with a large donation, they may have naming rights to the new library, Zuege said.
In addition to focusing on the library, Zuege said he wants to continue serving on the Department of Public Works Committee.
Zuege's background and work experience include a high school education and four years of service in the Coast Guard. He worked for 32 years as a machine operator in the paper industry for a Wisconsin Rapids company with the most recent name of NewPage, before retiring in May of 2005. In July 2005, Zuege moved to Orfordville from Wisconsin Rapids and became active in village politics right away, he said.
Zuege has been married for 39 years. He has one daughter, who lives in Elkhorn, and two grandsons, who are ages 5 and one and-a-half months.
Calls made on Monday to Village President David Olsen, Village Trustee Dale Peterson and Municipal Judge Terry Miller were not returned before press time.
