ROCKTON - With the April elections fast approaching, prospective candidates running for the Rockton Village Board and Hononegah Board of Education are preparing campaigns and turning in nomination papers.
The Rockton Village Board has five candidates running for the trustee seats of Dave Winters, Gail Beach and Terri Flodeen. Winters will be running to reclaim his position, while Beach and Flodeen are not seeking another term. New candidates include Cory Magnus, Josh Brown, John Peterson and Ambyr Knight.
Nominating papers were due for the Rockton Village Board on Dec. 15. Village President Dale Adams said the papers had to be in early in case a primary was needed. Candidates had to have a minimum of 25 voter signatures to be considered for the positions. Adams said the number of signatures depends on voter turnout from the previous election.
“We had a real low voter turnout at the last election,” he said.
Also on the ballot will be the position of village president. Adams will be running for re-election, while trustee Gary Cooper is appealing a decision by a review panel to allow him back in the race after a discrepancy over his current living situation.
Cooper submitted petitions sighting his home address is on Meadowcrest Drive. Former trustee Scott Wallace then filed a legal objection to the petitions stating Cooper no longer lives at that address or within the village limits.
“I would have filed the objection on anyone in that situation,” Wallace said. “I wouldn't want anyone representing me that is already known to be misleading.”
Wallace's objection was seen by the review panel, which decided to take Cooper's name off of the ballot. The review panel included Village Clerk Jan Modersohn, Trustee Terri Flodeen and Trustee Scott Fridley. Adams, who was on the review panel, removed himself due to conflict of interest.
“He swore an oath that that was his address,” Adams said about the situation. “He knew what he did was wrong. He did not live there at the time and doesn't plan on living there any more.”
Cooper's appeal will be heard by a circuit court judge on Thursday morning at the Winnebago County Courthouse. If the review panel's decision is reversed, Cooper will again join Adams on the general election ballot.
The Hononegah Board of Education has four seats open for prospective candidates to fill. Open positions include that of board members Tana Vettore, Sandy Fordell, Scott Moyer and Diane LaForge. None of the four have requested nominating papers to run again.
Nominating papers are due for the Hononegah Board of Education on Jan. 26. Candidates may begin filing papers on Jan. 20 at 7:30 a.m. and must have 50 signatures to be considered for the positions.
Both boards will hold the general elections on April 7.
