Dog day care in Roscoe Township attracts customers
ROSCOE - Two nurses have followed their dreams of opening a dog boarding, day care and grooming facility.
Steve and Katie Switzer opened Stonebridge Kennels, 6142 Burr Oak Road, rural Roscoe, in early November next to their home.
The couple built a new 5,000-square-foot facility, shaped like a barn, to offer area residents an upscale facility for pet pampering. Stonebridge already has attracted 100 customers with its discounts, country setting and careful attention to dogs. In addition to the Switzers, the facility employs a full-time groomer and a couple of part-time workers.
Since Stonebridge Kennels first opened, the facility has been flooded with animals. On Friday, there were 38 dogs being cared for, although there is room for up to 92 dogs. The couple expects business to grow, especially this summer when families are taking vacations.
“Dogs are where it's at,” Steve Switzer said.
Because the Village of Roscoe prohibits dog boarding facilities, Steve Switzer said people have been dying for a kennel to open. Because the couple lives on six acres in Roscoe Township, they were able to open the facility.
The facility is located next to the Switzers' home and includes two separate fenced-in areas where dogs can get some exercise. The Switzers said that the dogs are taken out at least four times a day when they come for day care. Having the separate spaces allow the smaller dogs such as Chihuahuas and the big dogs such as Great Danes.
Originally from Rockford, the couple has moved to a rural setting in Roscoe that they share with a cat, four dogs and a few other farm animals. The couple met while working as nurses in the emergency room.
“We each have a biology background with an emphasis in animal behavior,” Switzer said.
As the owners of four dogs themselves, the Switzers knew how difficult it was to travel with pets or find pet sitters.
“It was such an imposition to have people come and have to watch our dogs,” Steve Switzer said.
Katie Switzer said she visited a couple kennels, but has found a system that works for her and her husband. They each decided to stick with what they know best - dogs - for now.
Those interested in bringing their dogs to stay need to bring them in for a quick visit to make sure the dog can get along with the others. As long as the dogs are spayed or neutered, aren't aggressive or under six months old, they will be welcome at Stonebridge.
