Melting snow, rain cause river to rise

Travelers who hit the road Christmas Eve had some heavy snow to contend with in the Stateline Area, but today there is a good chance much of that snow will be melted by warm temperatures and rain.
The warming temperatures and rain in the Stateline Area also has raised concerns of potential flooding along the Rock River. Melting ice and snow has caused river levels to rise on both sides of the state line. The Rock River at Afton measured at 8.05 feet this morning, according to the National Weather Service. Flood stage for that portion of the river is 9 feet. The Rock River at Rockton was at 8.45 feet this morning. Flood stage at that portion of the river is 10 feet.
Wednesday, snowflakes were falling in the Stateline Area in the morning hours. Snowfall measurements were consistent with both Beloit College and Rockford Airport reporting 2 inches of snow Wednesday. Rockford reports 27.9 inches of snow has been recorded since Dec. 1.
This morning, many travelers were met by icy roads in the Stateline Area, making it a challenge to get to work or to stores for after-Christmas sales. There were some reports of cars in ditches Wednesday due to snow. High winds caused some drifting Wednesday.
Today, weather will be warming considerably with highs in the lower 40s.
Tonight there is a chance of light rain and thunderstorms and areas of fog through the night. Lows will be in the mid 30s with south winds at 5 to 15 mph.
Rain is likely Saturday with areas of fog through the day. High temperatures will be in the mid 40s. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent.
Saturday night will be colder with light snow likely, with accumulation of around an inch. Lows will be in the lower 20s with northwest winds at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow is 70 percent.
Sunday will be colder with a 20 percent chance of light snow in the morning. Highs will be in the lower 30s with west winds at 10 to 15 mph.
Sunday night will be partly cloudy with lows in the lower 20s.
Monday will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 30s. Lows Monday night will be around 19.
Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the mid 30s. Tuesday night lows will be in the lower 20s.
Wednesday will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 20s. Lows Wednesday night will be around 11.
New Years Day will be partly sunny with a 20 percent chance of light snow. Highs will be in the lower 20s.
