Some people just find helping others in the community to be a natural part of living.

Terri Burdick grew up with this philosophy because her mother, Helen Dueringer, set the example for her.

“I started early on,” she said of the long list of endeavors for which she has volunteered over the years.

Since Terri is involved with finances everyday in her capacity as senior vice president of administration and operations at Blackhawk Bank in Beloit, it also seems natural that she would use that ability in her volunteering efforts.

She also honed her leadership skills by attending the leadership academy the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Beloit initiated several years ago. “That was my foray into community service,” she said.

One agency Terri has been associated with in a variety of ways is the Stateline United Way - an organization that is always budget conscious as it makes tough decisions about providing local funding.

Terri began with the United Way when she was employed in the Human Resources Department at another local company as the head of the employee contribution campaign.

“I started doing that even before I really knew what the United Way was all about,” she said.

She soon realized that each contribution “is a wonderful way to take a small amount of dollars and help the community.”

And over the years, Terri has served the United Way also as: a member of the Board of Directors since 2006, a Budget and Allocation Panel Member since 2004, Campaign Cabinet, Finance Division Liaison since 2007, Campaign spokesperson since 2006, participant of the Day of Caring and in 2009 she will serve the board as its incoming president. Terri also received the Thomas Morgan Jones Volunteer Award in 2008.

Of her active service, Stateline United Way Executive Director Steve Kincaid is grateful.

“She certainly has been an excellent volunteer. She always follows up on all her assignments and she's a self-starter,” Kincaid said.

“She achieves what she sets out to do, she follows up on her own and she reports in. It makes our job easy to work with people like her,” he said.

Other volunteer activities include serving on: the Management Development Advisory Committee at Blackhawk Technical College, the Finance Committee at Second Congregational Church, the Ethics Committee for the City of Beloit and the La Voz Latina Board of Directors in Rockford. Previously, she also served on the board of the Stateline Family YMCA and as a grant writer for the Voluntary Action Center.

In her capacity as a volunteer grant writer, she helped the community in other ways.

“Terri helped to write a successful proposal for the very first database system used by the University of Wisconsin -Rock County Foundation,” said Lynnette Newton, VAC executive director.

“The foundation was brand-new and had to build from hard copy records. Terri's proposal secured funding that really helped them get up-to-speed. Terri also wrote a proposal to develop a Hispanic Wellness initiative for Nutrition and Health Associates (WIC). Although she and I joked about having to request funds for simple, plastic “sippy cups”, writing that proposal was a great opportunity to learn how small grants can address important issues such as preventing childhood tooth decay,” Newton pointed out.

Terri is a Beloit resident and is married to David Burdick. The couple has one son, Christopher.
