Whether it's providing transportation so a friend can get to a doctor's appointment, recording careful notes as a club secretary, completing treasurer's duties for her church group or helping patients at Beloit Memorial Hospital, Nancy Ladwig continues to give back to her community.
A lifelong Beloit resident, she graduated from Beloit College and began a 40-year career in the insurance business, moving up through the years becoming a partner in the TMH agency.
A few things Nancy learned over her years of working with people is that: “You have to learn to deal with a lot of different people - you make a lot of friends and acquaintances,” she said.
Those experiences she also found valuable in her volunteer work.
Nancy also married and raised a family. In so doing, she also fulfilled volunteer tasks such as being a den mother for Cub Scouts, a PTA secretary at Morgan Elementary School and a Sunday school teacher at Second Congregational Church.
Also, In previous years, she volunteered as: a board member of the Westside Business Association, president and program chairman for Insurance Women of Southern Wisconsin, member of Zonta and American Business Women's Association, tutor for Stateline Literacy Council and an enumerator for the 2000 Census in Beloit and special census in Roscoe.
Her time was more limited, then, however.
“I have the time now - I do a lot more now because I can. Like a lot of seniors, you like to give back and contribute,” she said.
Her willingness to help is appreciated by those who know her.
“She's just a wonderful secretary,” said Ethel Bridge, past president of the Federation of Women group in the local area.
Nancy is a valued recorder of the minutes because she is accurate and specific in her
reporting.
“She gets it all down. I think being secretary is the hardest job - it's a big job and she's top notch,” Ethel said.
Nancy also is a member of Second Congregational Church in Beloit where she is active with the Women's Fellowship group.
During meetings, Nancy has come to know members such as Bev Shockley.
Bev acknowledged how instrumental Nancy is and how willing she is to make herself available.
“She's a really good worker and a wonderful person,” she said.
“She gets really involved and anything you ask her to do, she can do.”
The Women's Fellowship meets most months and hosts dinners, programs and potlucks.
In addition, Nancy is making all the arrangements for the group's annual trip to the Fireside dinner theater in Fort Atkinson.
“She orders all the tickets and makes sure everyone gets there,” Bev said.
Nancy also serves as the treasurer for the church group.
And, a couple Mondays a month, she dons the turquoise smock that symbolizes she is a volunteer at Beloit Memorial Hospital. As an escort, she helps patients by taking them to their destinations, to areas such as the X-ray Department.
Nancy and her husband, Jerry Ladwig, also worked as poll workers spending the entire day on the job during the recent presidential election.
