Man pleads to kidnapping
ROCKFORD - A Belvidere man pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to conspiracy to kidnap and use of a firearm during the kidnapping.
Louis Guajardo Jr, 21, was charged with co-defendants Ernesto A. Martinez, 19, and Christopher E. Toney, 18, both of Rockford.
Guajardo, who admits to being a member of the Latin Kings street gang, was accused of kidnapping the victim in Rockford on April 11. The victim was able to escape before the suspects made a call to demand a ransom.
Sentencing for Guajardo is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in U.S. District Court - Northern District of Illinois in Rockford. The cases against Martinez and Toney are still pending.
Dance program receives grant
The Beloit College Dance Program recently was awarded a $10,000 grant from the American Masterpieces Program of the National Endowment for the Arts and Dance/USA.
The grant will be used to restage dance pieces by choreographer Merce Cunningham, a leading 20th century choreographer and performer.
The dance concert will be performed by Beloit College students under the direction of Paige Cunningham, a professional dancer and choreographer.
Women's Expo set for Nov. 30
JANESVILLE - The Rock County Women's Expo will be held 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Pontiac Convention Center, 2809 N. Pontiac Drive, Janesville.
The expo features 50 to 70 exhibitors. Some of those who will be featured at the expo include the Rock County Health Department, which will be distributing information and giving flu shots, and the Janesville Boys and Girls Club, which will present information on the clubs programs for youth.
There also will be guest speakers at the expo discussing a variety of topics, including how to protect yourself from identity theft, how to manage stress and on fashion and fitness.
Admission to the expo is free, but organizers are asking for people to donate a nonperishable food item, which will be donated to local food pantries.
