Pit bull bites 4-year-old girl
A pit bull with no collar or tags was shot by a Town of Beloit police officer Saturday after it bit a 4-year-old girl.

Town of Beloit police were called to the Star Zenith Boat Club, 2680 Riverside Drive at 12:11 p.m. to investigate the report of a child who was bitten by a pit bull. The girl was on a swing in the play area when a male pit bull pulled her from the swing, according to police reports. The child received minor injuries and did not need medical attention.

An officer came across a large male pit bull that attacked him. The officer fired his gun, wounding the animal. The Rock County Humane Society took the pit bull. It is to be euthanized and the remains will be examined for rabies, according to police reports.

Man charged for sexual assault
A Beloit man was arrested for second-degree sexual assault over the weekend.


Kelsey Kenney, 23, is accused of sexual assault to a 16-year-old girl, which reportedly occurred Friday.

Kenney is being held in the Rock County Jail pending his initial court appearance set for today.

Golden Apple nominations in
More than 400 sixth- to 12th-grade teachers in Winnebago and Boone counties received notification Friday they were nominated for the Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Award for 2009.

A reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Radisson Hotel in Rockford to honor the teachers.

The nomination is the first stage of a search for teachers who represent excellence in middle school and high school teaching. Nominees with five years of teaching experience who are teaching full time in a secondary grade classroom are encouraged to follow the awards process, which includes a self-reflective essay and letters of recommendation.

A selection committee will review the applications, and 20 teachers will be chosen to continue the process. Five will receive the Golden Apple Award and will be honored in April.

The recipients will receive a cash award, professional development stipends, Rockford College Scholarships, laptop computers and a classroom computer.

Observatory open house set
Beloit College will hold an observatory open house starting at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the rooftop observatory on top of the Center for the Sciences.

Britt Scharringhausen, assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Beloit College, will lead the events of observing the night sky. She will point out points of interest using the naked eye, binoculars and 10-inch telescopes. Objects that should be visible will include Jupiter and its moons; the double-star systems of Alberio; Mizar and Alcor; the Hercules star cluster; and the Eagle, Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae.

The event is free and open to the public. In the event of rain or cloudy skies, Scharringhausen will present an astronomy lecture in Room 402 of the Center for the Sciences.
