Health message on billboard
A billboard with a message for area youth to make wise health choices concerning alcohol use has been popping up around Rock County, thanks to the efforts of area agencies and individuals.

The billboard has the message “Choose. Be Strong,” and shows a glass of beer with a red slash through it. It first appeared near Orfordville in August and September and now is in Newville.

The billboard is being posted thanks to the efforts of the Focus on Teens Workgroup, which consists of the Rock County Health Department, the Partners in Prevention group, school districts and county government officials. Kate Baldwin, director of Partners in Prevention, said the Choose. The billboard message is funded through the Drug-Free Communities Support Program grant.

Cancer center commended
ROCKFORD - The Commission on Cancer has issued a three-year approval award with commendation to the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care.

The award and commendation was based on an on-site survey conducted at the center in September. The center for cancer care not only met the standards for approval, but exceeded the standards in a number of areas, which earned it the commendation.

Some of the areas the center exceeded standards included in prevention and early detection by using outreach programs; cancer registry staff continuing education, and providing patient education.

SIDS awareness urged
Wisconsin Gov. James Doyle has declared October SIDS Awareness Month in Wisconsin.

Nutrition and Health Associates and the Rock County Women Infant and Children Program (WIC) are concerned with infant safety and seek to help families reduce risk factors associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Local health officials recommend families place babies to sleep on their backs for naps and bedtime. Use a firm crib mattress covered by fitted sheets. Do not use crib bumpers. Use a one-piece sleeper or other warm clothes instead of blankets. Keep soft objects such as pillows, quilts and stuffed toys, out of cribs. Keep cigarette smoke away from babies. Have babies sleep in properly assembled cribs. Babies should not sleep in the same bed as their parents or siblings. No one should sleep with a baby on a couch or in an armchair.

Each year in the United States, about 2,000 infant deaths are counted as SIDS deaths.

For more information, contact the Nutrition and Health Associates at 608-362-1566 or 608-754-3722.
