Lecture to be held Tuesday at UW-Rock; five-session class planned on topic as well
JANESVILLE - Globetrotter and expert in border crossing Bob Keith will give a presentation as well as hold a series of classes at the University of Wisconsin-Rock County.
Keith, of Janesville, traveled to Iraq for the second time this winter to get what he believes is an unbiased portrayal of the country, the people and the war.
With only $2,000 in his pocket, Keith also spent two weeks in Iraq last October by sneaking across the Turkish border by enlisting a Kurdish cab driver to sneak him in. Keith was able to travel from place to place including cities such as Mosul, Erbil, Zakho, Dahuk, Halabja and others.
Keith will share his insights and discuss his travels in northern Iraq at a lecture titled “Culture in the War Zone” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Wisconsin - Rock County, 2909 Kellogg Ave., Janesville. The lecture will be presented in Allen Hall, lecture hall 106, and is free and open to the public.
Keith also will lead a series of classes through the UW-Rock County Office of Continuing Education. The classes will offer a more in-depth analysis and discussion of the day-to-day life of people in Iraq as well as details on how Keith prepared for his travel there, according to Carrie Hermanson, director of University Relations for UW-Rock County.
Culture in a War Zone: Northern Iraq, a five-session course, will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 21-Nov. 18, in Room 131 of Andrews Hall on the UW-Rock campus. The fee for the course is $49. To register, call 608-758-6565, ext. 360, or visit http://rock.uwc.edu/courses/continuing/.
In his 50s, Keith has spent time in the military, worked as a dishwasher, carried newspapers and traveled the globe. He is disappointed in the lack of Wisconsin media representation in Iraq.
A self-described open book and cultural journalist, Keith has said he only wants to share what he observes. He invites everyone to his Web site to simply take a moment and take a look at www.cooldadiomedia.com.
