Flu shot clinics set
The Winnebago County Health Department has scheduled several flu and pneumonia shot clinics in the Stateline Area.
Upcoming clinics in the area include:
€ 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the South Beloit Junior High School, 850 Hayes Ave., South Beloit.
€ 1 - 5:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Roscoe United Methodist Church, 10816 Main St., Roscoe.
€ 3 - 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at Garden of Prairie Rose Complex, 4711 Prairie Rose Road, Roscoe.
€ 1 - 4 p.m. Oct. 28 at Hononegah High School, 307 Salem St., Rockton.
€ 12:30 - 3 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Sandcastle Senior Center, 201 S. Eighth St., South Beloit.
€ 4 - 6 p.m. Nov. 17 at Curves, 5348 Williams Drive, Roscoe.

Blood drive slated
ROCKFORD - A blood drive will be held noon - 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Winnebago County Health Department, 401 Division St., Rockford.
The blood drive is being held for the Rock River Valley Blood Center, which provides blood and related products to Beloit Memorial Hospital, Rockford Memorial Hospital, SwedishAmerican Hospital and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center among other area health facilities.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health on the day they give blood. For information, call 815-961-2342.
Alzheimer's walk successful
The Alzheimer's Support Center Walk to Remember event held at Riverside Park in Beloit Sept. 20 raised about $40,000.
Carolyn Hamilton raised the most money in sponsorships with $6,057. The top team went to Team Haskins Heroes who raised $4,524. Haskins Heroes also had the most team members with 24 walkers.
There were 153 walkers in the Walk to Remember, as well as several four-legged friends who participated in the Pets on Parade.
Investments discussed
Investment and financial advice will be offered during a seminar set for 7 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium at Beloit Memorial Hospital, 1969 W. Hart Road, Beloit.
Dennis Staaland, executive vice president and trust officer for First National Bank and Trust Company in Beloit, will discuss what is going on in the global economy and investment options.

Radon testing urged
Homeowners in Rock County soon will be keeping their windows and doors shut because of dropping temperatures. This could cause radon gas to become a health concern.
Tim Banwell, environmental health director of the Rock County Health Department, encourages residents to test their homes for radon now that fall has arrived. Radon is an odorless, colorless gas. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
The health department offers radon test kits for $12.66 each or radon test kits can be obtained at most local hardware or home improvement stores.

Breast cancer risk eyed
ROCKFORD - “Strategies to Reduce Your Risk of Breast Cancer,” will be the topic of a free program set for 5 p.m. Oct. 23 in the atrium at the Woman's Center at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, 5666 E. State St., Rockford.
Dr. Kent Hoskins, an oncologist at OSF Saint Anthony, and Peggy Rogers, genetic risk assessment nurse, will present the program.
Free health screenings will be offered, including blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, bone density and cardiac risk and breast cancer risk assessments. Informational booths also will be set up providing information on sleep disorders, memory disorders, healthy eating and more.
Reservations are required. To arrange for seating, call 815-395-5493.
Diabetes focus of seminar
JANESVILLE - Diabetes will be the focus at a Mercy Health System open house set for 8:30 a.m. - noon Nov. 1 at the Mercy health Mall, 1010 N. Washington St., Janesville.
Free blood pressure, blood glucose and lipid profile screenings will be offered. Exhibitors will answer questions. There will be activities for children and door prizes and goodie bags will be offered.
The event is free and open to the public.
Registration is encouraged, but walk-ins will be welcome. For information, call 608-756-6100 or 1-888-396-3729.
Medical school for teens
JANESVILLE - Mercy Health System will host a Medical School for Teens program beginning Oct. 14.
The eight-week program, held at Mercy Clinic South, 849 Kellogg Ave., Janesville, is open to young adults age 14 to 21 who are interested in the medical field.
Taught by Mercy Health System resident physicians, each weekly session will focus on a different topic and includes many hands-on activities.
Sessions will be held on Tuesday nights, Oct. 14 through Dec. 9. There will be no class Nov. 25. Participants can choose from two class times: 6-7 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. The cost is $30. For more information or to register, call Mercy HealthLine at 608- 756-6100 or 888- 39-MERCY.
