Festival starts early with Cinema a la Carte

The Second Annual Beloit International Film Festival Cinema a la Carte will offer people the opportunity to gather at neighbors' homes for unique and film-related dinner parties.

The dinners are designed to drum up enthusiasm for the 2009 Beloit International Film Festival (BIFF) season, which is scheduled for Feb. 19-22.

“It inserts film into the community's lives for more than just the four days of the festival,” said Becky Rogers, Beloit International Film Festival co-founder and Cinema a la Carte co-chair.

Cinema a la Carte co-chair Joanna Kutter came up with the idea for the dinners in intimate, small group settings.

“It's just a time to get together with friends and talk about the films,” Kutter said.

This year, there will be 14 dinners held, about the same as last year. Funds raised will be used to give out grants to BIFF film makers. Last year, Cinema a la Carte raised $16,000 for filmmaker grants.

Last year, Kutter held one of the most popular dinners, with the theme “Murder on the Orient Express.”

“My friend and I came up with our own mystery. All the characters were geared towards our guests,” Kutter said. “It was very personalized.”

This year, Kutter is teaming up with Ron Nief, and Meg and Rod Beaudoin at Kutter's home in Edgerton to offer a dinner with a “Casablanca” theme and Moroccan style food.

Kutter is encouraging her guests to dress in attire popular in the 1940s. When attendees aren't playing her piano, they will be invited to do a little light gambling using chips as opposed to money.

Rogers said she will be involved in two dinners this year, one haunted event at her home at 1408 Emerson St. and then another one with a Wisconsin Badgers tailgate theme.

Rogers said she looks forward to attending all the diverse parties.

“Every host does something different than the next. It kind of makes it addictive to see what the next person is going to do,” Rogers said.

Because the dinners are in private homes, space is limited.
