Lap-band surgery explained
ROCKFORD - A free seminar on the benefits of gastric banding for weight loss will be offered 7 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Inn, 7550 E. State St., Rockford.
Dr. Karin Blumofe, a general, thoracic and vascular surgeon, with Beloit Clinic and Beloit Memorial Hospital, is the only surgeon in the Beloit, Rockford and Janesville areas to be certified in the lap-band gastric banding surgery. Using a laparoscopic surgical technique, the band is placed around the top portion of the stomach, helping patients feel full sooner.
Blumofe will discuss the surgery, necessary lifestyle changes and who is a good candidate for the surgery.
The seminar is being presented by Beloit Memorial Hospital's NorthPointe Health and Wellness in Roscoe.

Vitamin D essential
Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem that can lead to serious health problems.
“In children, it can retard growth and cause skeletal deformities,” emphasizes Karen Jaskula, Registered Dietician with Beloit Memorial Hospital. “And in adults, it can lead to osteoporosis, fractures, some cancers and various autoimmune, infectious and cardiovascular diseases.”
It's difficult to get enough vitamin D from diet alone unless you eat oily fish frequently. Sun exposure is the most important source (UV rays trigger the skin to make vitamin D), but in northern latitudes is usually inadequate during winter. Also, as people age, their skin doesn't make vitamin D as efficiently, so those over age 50 are at increased risk for vitamin D deficiency.
“Specific recommendations depend on age, gender, and other factors (such as pregnancy),” states Jaskula.
Talk to your doctor about your vitamin D intake. Vitamin D tablets are easily available and vitally important to your overall health.
