Trojans win Brodhead meet: Turner's boys team packs runners to win invitational

BRODHEAD - Beloit Turner's boys cross country picked up right where it left off last year.

The defending Rock Valley Champions won the Brodhead Invitational Thursday, 33-46 over the host Cardinals. Tim Laursen was second overall and the Trojans' top runner, finishing in 18:11. Mike Kreiser (18:35), Joey Williams (18:45) and Max Wright (18:47) also had strong showings.

Brodhead's Dan Drewes won the meet with a time of 17:57 while teammate Jordan Riemer was third overall at 18:17.

For the girls, Brodhead sophomore Shannon Klein cruised to a 12 second win over Arial Shogren of Madison Edgewood. Klein, the 2007 RVC champion, finished in 16:14.

Edgewood won the event with 30 points, 23 points better than Evansville. Brodhead had 77.

Turner's top finisher was sophomore Traci Pingel, who finished 15th with a time of 18:44. The Trojans did not have enough participants to score, however.

PREP SOCCER: Beloit Memorial 2, Delavan-Darien 1 - While Beloit Memorial (2-0-0) scored the same amount of goals as in its 2-0 season-opening victory at Rockford Auburn, head coach Chris Kindschi was much happier with his team's attack Thursday night at Jacobson Field.

“It was a huge win for us,” Kindschi said. “This was a 180-degree turn from the offense. They had great energy and kept a lot of pressure on them. They played very hard and smart. Delavan is generally ranked one or two in the regional and a solid contender for the state tournament so things are looking good for Beloit soccer.”

The Knights scored five minutes in on a deflected shot by Patrick Gathof. They made it 2-0 in the second half on a goal by Misael Rivas off an assist by Jake Williams. The Comets finally got on the board at the 72nd mark on a goal by Jacob Ross, but that was it.

Beloit outshot Delavan-Darien 16-10. Winning goaltender Christian Perez stopped three shots. The Comets' Tyler Butke had six saves.

The Knights are back in action Saturday when they host Racine Lutheran at 11 a.m.

PREP GOLF: Sun Prairie Triangular - Alyssa Chase shot an 87 and Kala Drake an 88 to lead host Sun Prairie to first place with a 391 score. Madison Memorial was next at 413. Beloit Memorial did not field a complete team.

Nicki Masterson shot a 104 and Bridget Monahan a 106.

In the jayvee triangular, Beloit was second.

PREP TENNIS: The Beloit Memorial girls tennis team fell at Janesville Craig Thursday, 7-0. Sarah Morgan and Alexis Anderson won the only game for Beloit, but fell 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles.
