Beloit mother plans fundraiser for U.S. Marines
AFTON - Operation Ooh-Rah will be in full swing 2 - 9 p.m. Saturday at the Afton Pub and Park.
Linn Krafjack, mother of U.S. Marine Cpl. Henry J. Pulcine, has set up the fundraising event to raise money for care packages for the 2nd LAAD Battalion that has been shipped out for another tour in Iraq.
Soldiers in the battalion range from their first time deployed to as many as six times. This tour will be the third for Pulcine.
“It is very important to me to try to help the soldiers be a little more comfortable while so far away from home and the ones they really love,” she said.
The show will include music, a biker rodeo, a watermelon eating contest, a dunk tank and clowns for the children.
Music will be provided by Ape **** Holiday, Pistol Pete featuring Zach Johns on the drums, End Fight Scene and Dynamite Society.
While the pub is rock'n, the event also will offer ice cream and food catered in by Friendly Village Catering. Krafjack also has arranged for many big prizes.
“In the past we have set up many raffles, this time my mission is to put together a few special bigger packages that will really make someone's day,” she said.
The raffle packages are one for $5 or five for $20.
Krafjack is no stranger to raising money for her son's battalion. The first time Pulcine was deployed, she sponsored a book drive and the second time she held a golf play-day. This year she had decided on a music show.
“It's a big shopping cart to fill so we need help,” Krafjack said. “All proceeds in the past have bought care package items, and this time it will too. All money not used will go towards the Displaced Military Family Fund.”
Pulcine said he joined the Marine Corps for many reasons.
“There was a certain sense of patriotism and just a little desire for revenge after the events of 9/11, but there was also a desire to honor the memory of my grandfather, Leonard Buroker,” he said. “There was also the desire to see more than the life I'd known until that point. I just had to travel beyond the borders of my home state somehow.”
Pulcine joined the Marines in 2003 and had reported to Iraq in early 2004 and again in late 2005. He was promoted to his current rank in 2006 and re-enlisted for another four years of duty shortly after.
During his time in service, Pulcine has received awards including a combat action ribbon, a global war on terrorism expeditionary medal, a global war on terrorism service medal, an Iraq campaign medal, a sea service deployment ribbon and a national defense service medal. He has undergone recruit training; Marine combat training and nuclear, biological and chemical training.
Pulcine is a 2002 graduate of Craig High School in Janesville. He now resides on base in North Carolina.
Admission to the event is $5 for general admission and free for kids age 12 and under. Tickets are available at Stateline Cycles, Marine Corps League, Hammy's Roadside Bar, Skip's Friendly Village and Afton Pub and Park.
