Beloit pitchers allow 11 runs in weekend losses
Forget about 13. The number 11 was bad luck for the Beloit Snappers over the weekend.
That's the number of runs the Lansing Lugnuts scored in back-to-back games as they defeated Beloit 11-0 on Saturday night and 11-8 on Sunday afternoon. Lansing also won the opener of the series, 3-2, on Friday.
Lansing jumped out to a 9-1 lead Sunday, scoring eight times in the second inning of Beloit starter Steven Hirschfeld (7-4). He went four innings and allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits.
Beloit tried to come back, scoring twice in the fourth inning on two hits and a costly error by Moises Sierra, and adding another run in the sixth.
The Lugnuts got the two runs back in the seventh off Chris Anderson to go ahead 11-4.
The Snappers didn't give up, scoring a run in the eighth. Paul Kelly, back from the disabled list, belted a one-out double and scored on Rene Leveret's single to left. Kelly finished the game with two doubles and two runs scored.
Beloit tacked on three more runs in the ninth. A two-run double off the bat of Chris Cates cut it to 11-8 with one out, but Kelly and Leveret grounded out to third base to end the game.
Reliever Mike Allen pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Beloit (21-22 in the second half).
Saturday was all Lansing as the Lugnuts outhit Beloit, 15-4. Eight of the hits were for extra bases.
David Bromberg started for the Snappers and lasted only 2 1/3 innings. He allowed five hits and five runs in the first inning. He was tagged for 10 hits and eight runs in all while uncorking five wild pitches.
Reliever Michael Tarsi allowed two runs and three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Danny Hernandez and Santos Arias pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits and a run.
Leveret had two of Beloit's four hits, including a double. Ben Revere returned to the lineup, collecting one hit in three at-bats before being lifted for a pinch hitter.
The entire MWL is off Monday. The Snappers return to action tomorrow with a four-game series at Kane County. The team returns home Saturday to take on the Ryne Sandberg managed Peoria Chiefs.
